Overview

The purpose of this project was to improve upon my ability to display information and data within design. Utilizing the various principles of visual design and information architecture to display data in a visually interesting/appealing way and show information to users in a way that would induce more engagement with the information.

Project Goals

The goal in this project was to create an visually appealing infographic based on a collection of data that was gathered by me. The purpose was to create a visually appealing design with the purpose of displaying a collection quantitative and qualitative data to a user.

Additionally I wanted to create a design that fit the retro, y2k internet aesthetic with a maximalist design philosophy behind it to match the theme of the data, and maintain interest from viewers in the design.

Design Process

Data Collection / User Survey

To begin the process of design, I first needed a sample of data to work with. To do this I used a google forum poll to poll fellow classmates and other Interactive Design Students at Kennesaw State university about the design habits. By having other students complete this survey I would then be able to collect that data and implement it into a visual representation of my findings.

Design Concepts & Analysis

Understanding the data

I started by analyzing the results of my data to determine how I exactly wanted to showcase it within my design. I looked into how many response I had in each section, and the variation in results to determine what the best way of displaying this information to the viewer would be. This led me to decide to have a histogram, pie chart, and ranking charts be the main source of visual representations of the data, and have text depict the less important or notable data points as viewers typically prioritize visual appeal over reading.

Visualizing the data

Following my analysis of my data i began creating each of the visualizations, creating them and separating them in different quadrants of the design to have them stand out from each other. In addition to this i made sure to add visual elements that were designed to lead the viewers attention to the next following part of the design to keep them engaged and learning without having to strain to find where the information of interest is.

Retrospective

Completing this project taught me a lot about how information architecture and and statistics/data are depicted within design work. Typically representing data in a visually striking and interesting way is overlooked, but by doing this project it showed me just how much having a dynamic visualization of information can engage users and viewers. Because of the maximalist approach, i made sure to focus on having distinct information hierarchy to keep the views attention for longer and leading their eyes through the design to gather information from each different part of the design.
