Overview

The purpose of this project is to create a high-fidelity prototype aimed at teaching users something new. This project involves utilizing the various laws and principles of user interface design to plan, design, and prototype a functional and effective user interface. Through utilizing these core concepts, the website will achieve easy navigation and intuitive content design, allowing for easy comprehension and memorization for all users.

Project Goals

The goal in this project was to be able to create a detailed user-centered interface aimed at teaching users something new.

The most important factor in this design was allowing users to easily comprehend and important information by utilizing smooth navigation and clear content structure for an intuitive user experience.

Design Process

Design Proposal

To begin the process of design, I first laid out a written proposal that served to detail how I would implement the various laws and principles of user interface design into my promotional website, allowing for a structured overview of what this project will offer. Click the link below for a preview of this proposal.

Design Concepts

Multimedia Principle

The Multimedia Principle describes that people learn information better when words and images are used together when explaining something rather than using words alone. So, I considered this principle throughout the design of the "How to set a reservation" tutorial by including a text description alongside an explanative graphic, which both depict the same information to users, allowing them to process and retain important information easier.

Fitts's Law

Fitts's Law describes that the time it takes for users to interact with a button correlates to the size and distance of that button. I considered Fitts's Law within my design by creating large clickable event cards in easily accessible locations. This reduces the amount of time it takes users to locate and click on each event, allowing them to access important information more efficiently.

Von Restorff Effect

The Von Restorff Effect defines that when multiple similar objects are shown, when one stands out from the rest, it is most likely to be remembered. The Von Restorff Effect was considered throughout the interface by utilizing bold-colored text to indicate key information within the body text, allowing it to stand out and display its significance to the user.

Prototype

View a detailed interactive prototype through the link below, designed as a promotional website for the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The interface includes a home page, as well as four additional pages informing users about key facilities and attractions offered at the gardens, concluding with information informing users on purchasing tickets and memberships.

Retrospective

Completing this project allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the process of design by creating a project in a more structured and front-loaded work environment. Additionally, I was able to improve upon my ability to implement meaningful user-centered concepts into my work through the creation of a concrete design structure.
